Off to Iguazu, that is in the North-East of Argentina, bordering both Brazil and Paraguay. We stay at the Mercure Iguazu Hotel Iru, that is on the edge of the National Park, but still in the Iryapu jungle. Our visit here is purely to see the Iguazu Falls, the largest waterfall system in the world. The falls can be seen from both Argentina and Brazil, which is what we do, having to pass through a border checkpoint on the way. We were unsure what we were about to see; on our 6 months journey, we had seen many waterfalls in many countries, so we just wondered what would be so special about the Iguaza Falls. We firstly travelled to the Brazilian side and had to walk a little way to the first viewing platform, but when we arrived, there was this 'wow' factor. In front of us was what can only be described as a cliff as long as one could see (it's 1.7 miles long) and tumbling over this was a tumultuous torrent of water, cascading into the gorge below. Water was falling from nearly every avenue you could see; in fact, there are over 250 individual 'waterfalls' here, depending on the time of year. We view the falls from many different platforms, including one where we get wet from the spray to one reached by a lift, where we see the part of the falls called Devil's Throat. Later, we go to the Argentinian side and we get a different perspective. We see more closely the individual waterfalls, some of which are named (i.e. Adam and Eve). It is also an opportunity to see the Iguazu River that provides the water for the falls. Part of our journey within the National Park is on a little railway, that winds its way through the forest. Our tour takes most of the day, so it is good to get back to the hotel and chill beside the pool. But, it has been a great day and without doubt, we have seen the best waterfalls ever. Our guide says that there is debate over which of the 3 most significant falls are the greatest - Iguazu, Niagara or Victoria? Perhaps we should visit the other two to find out!
