We catch the Interislander ferry for our crossing to the North Island. It’s a lovely but cold morning, so it’s great to see the Marlborough Sound so clearly. The journey is about 3 hours, but time passes quite quickly. On our passage, we consider where to park the motorhome when we get to Wellington. The choices are quite bleak. Then Diane suggests we treat ourselves to a hotel stay and, to our surprise, there is an Intercontinental hotel in the city. We book a couple of days and they say the motorhome can be parked in their delivery bay. So we roll up at the hotel, get a couple of days clothes out of the motorhome and check in.

In Wellington, we have a wander around the city, which is quite compact. We take the furnicular railway up the hill to go to the Botanical Gardens, then walk down to the Museum, the latter housing a wonderful exhibition of Maui history. There is a great walk along the regenerated harbour, where we have a delicious meal at Shed No5. We are looked after by an enthusiastic French girl from Toulouse, who is another European that has fallen in love with the country. She also took a shine to Diane, as the waitress loved Peaky Blinders and Diane’s accent reminded her of the TV series!

Now, having enjoyed the hotel luxuries, it was back into the motorhome, now rather embarrassingly parked outside the hotel, and off to Napier.
