We needed to spend a night in Yichang due to an alteration to our travel arrangements. We did not know what to expect, but after being picked up at the bus station following our Three Gorges Dam excursion, we were pleasantly surprised, upon entering Yichang city, to see a lovely park that ran for about 10km alongside the Yangtze River. Our hotel, the Crowne Plaza, overlooked the park and was, also, a lovely place to stay. Our room was on the 22nd floor, so our view over the park and river, was delightful. Yichang is definitely an up and coming city. Our guide took us to the new museum, but in reality it was mainly a focus on the future; there are amazing plans in place to make Yichang a place to rival Bejing and Shanghai. Currently Yichang only caters for local interests and when we had a walk about that evening, we were clearly the only tourists there. Our stop to have a massage certainly brought some amusement and confusion to the non-English speaking staff, but we managed the language barrier okay. In the evening, we had a drink at the hotel bar and listened to a couple from Cuba, one playing a guitar and the other singing; they were pretty good as well as being rather annoyingly very handsome / attractive and we wondered what brought them to this unfamiliar place? Tomorrow off to Shanghai.
